To travel to the United States, non-U.S. citizens currently require not only a valid travel document (ESTA or visa) but also a National Interest Exception approved by the U.S. Embassy as well as a negative Covid-19 test (or documentation of recent Covid recovery).
- Visa interviews: The U.S. Embassy can schedule interviews only for those who qualify for a National Interest Exception (NIE). Follow the guidance on the U.S. Embassy website to request an NIE, and if approved, you will be scheduled for an interview in the coming weeks.
- National Interest Exceptions: Business travelers who offer vital support to critical infrastructure sectors in the United States may qualify. Requests must be made by the applicant or their legal counsel but not by human resource employees. There is no appeal process for NIE denials, but applicants are welcome to request an NIE again at any time.
- Negative Covid-19 test requirement: All airline passengers to the United States ages two years and older must provide a negative Covid-19 viral test taken within three calendar days of travel. This includes U.S. citizens. Alternatively, travelers may provide documentation from a licensed health care provider of having recovered from Covid-19 in the 90 days preceding travel.
