Finland is changing with the world. As a globalized society and economy brings nations and their people closer together, maintaining cultural roots is increasingly challenging. Still, the recently renovated Marski by Scandic celebrates small things from everyday life in Helsinki. Marski brings the city inside through local design aesthetics, feelings and foods, and it’s where we’ll be for Harvard Business Review at Amcham Finland with Ron Ashkenas on August 26th.
To learn more about the mission driving Marski, we caught up with General Manager Jouko Puranen and Kuusi Palaa Head Chef Sami Lyly. They talk about ‘Finnfulness,’ an original word which represents the idea of a modern Helsinki built into Marski’s new walls. Everything about the hotel interior has changed since its original construction in 1962. The fresh look and functionality also carry over Marski’s traditional values of sustainability and global consciousness.
Jouko told us, “We aim for full recycling. Our uniforms and napkins are made of recycled plastic bottles. Sustainability for Marski is in everything we do. It’s not just a word for us. It’s a way of life!”
Finnfulness also makes its way into the menu of Kuusi Palaa, a new arrival on the Helsinki restaurant scene advocating pure Finnish ingredients. Amcham event attendees can expect delectable tastes from signature dishes, such as Mokka6palaa, smoothies and mocktails. Kuusi Palaa prepares unique dishes according to any preference.
Head Chef Sami says, “Every guest is special to us. We don’t use the word diet. We consider it to be a choice, a way of life, and everyone’s own decision. Our restaurant is everybody’s local living room.”
