Charly Salonius-Pasternak

Charly Salonius-Pasternak works as the Lead Researcher heading up the Center on US Politics and Power at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, as well as a Senior Research Fellow at the institute’s Global Security Programme. His work focuses on international security issues, with a regional focus on Nordic and transatlantic security (including NATO), as well as U.S. foreign and defense policy. Thematically he focuses crisis management / peacekeeping and the impact of technology on security, including the development of warfare.
In 2017, he was a visiting research fellow at the Changing Character of War programme at Pembroke College (Oxford University), where he studied the impact of the Information Age on the character of war. During 2009-2010 Charly served as the international affairs adviser to the senior leadership of the Finnish Defence Forces, and a researcher at J5 (Strategic Planning) at the Finnish Defence Command. Charly gives frequent presentations to diverse interest groups and civil society organizations in Finland, and lectures at universities in Europe and the US.
Charly publishes in English, Swedish and Finnish, is frequently cited by media, and has appeared regularly on CNN, Sky News, BBC (UK), ABC (Australian), CBC (Canadian), NPO (Dutch), VRT (Belgian) SVT (Swedish), and Finnish (YLE, MTV, Nelonen) broadcasters. In 2020 was made a Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.
