Amcham Finland Visits Washington, Highlights Transatlantic Trade Relations
At the beginning of May, our CEO Alexandra Pasternak-Jackson was part of a delegation of 30 AmCham Executive Directors in Europe for the 2022 ACE U.S. Conference to Washington D.C. and Raleigh to meet with key policymakers and champion transatlantic trade and collaboration.
AmChams in Europe is an umbrella organization of American chambers of commerce representing more than 17,000 companies in Europe and Eurasia. The DC delegation discussed transatlantic trade and relations, the war in Ukraine and united support for Ukraine, bilateral economic ties, security and supply chains.
Amcham leaders met with officials from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Congress including meetings with Senator Thom Tillis, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Ruth Sherman, Deputy Under Secretary for International Trade, Diane Farrell, and U.S. Chamber CEO Suzanne Clark and other Chamber leadership including Executive Vice President and Head of International Affairs, Myron Brilliant, and our friends and champions Marjorie Chorlins and Garrett Workman.
“We carried the message of the importance of transatlantic relations and the need for the strong EU-US partnership based on the values we share. There is a lot of groundwork to be done in the transatlantic trade space and that’s at the core of our mission at Amcham Finland. However, the transatlantic relationship is stronger and more active than it has been in years,” said Pasternak-Jackson. Challenges remain with rising inflation, recovery from the Covid pandemic and the ongoing war in Europe.
Among other themes highlighted: NATO succession, Russia sanctions and transatlantic data flows. We plan to keep our members informed with events around these themes and other policy initiatives.
CEO Alexandra Pasternak-Jackson spoke with Senator Tillis about the mood in Finland, the Finnish defense and security industry, the recent Amcham Finland member Premix Group deal, and the U.S. – Finland partnerships in R&D.
Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Congressman Fred Upton hosted an AmCham Nordic breakfast roundtable at the U.S. Capitol to discuss transatlantic trade and other issues with Nordic AmCham Directors Stephen Brugger and Jason Turflinger.
During the visit, the U.S. Department of Commerce and AmChams in Europe launched EMPOWER HER, an initiative to empower women across both sides of the Atlantic. Read more here. The International Trade Administration‘s Under Secretary Diane Farrell and AmCham leaders signed the Declaration for the #EmpowerHer. The partnership between ITA and AmChams in Europe shapes actionable initiatives towards gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The delegation also traveled south to visit Raleigh North Carolina’s Research Trianglea leading life science hub in the U.S. representing a cross-section of business, government and university research and partnership. We met with Novo Nordisk’s Dale Pulczinski and SAS Institute’s CEO Jim Goodnight. The welcoming hospitality of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP) team and the decades-long partnership between business, government, and academia left a strong impression. Thank you Ryan Combs, Ambassador James P. Cain and Ashley Warren Riley.
“We continue to live in uncertain, unprecedented, and complex times. Now is when we must work together, more than ever,” Alexandra Pasternak-Jackson said. “Amcham Finland is here to be a good partner, to influence the government to be good partners to business. We are here to help with best
