Democratic capitalism is in grave danger. How can we bring it back from the brink? For its first 200 years, the American economy thrived and much of the world looked on with envy. As the nation’s economy grew, so did the global economy. But since the US bicentenary in 1976, outcomes have changed dramatically. Growth in the economic prosperity of the average family has slowed to a crawl, while the wealth of the richest citizens has grown to a level never seen before.
This imbalance threatens the democratic capitalist system which has served the global economy up to now, but which only works when the average American family benefits enough to keep voting for it. Roger Martin, world-renowned business thinker, and former Dean of Rotman Business School in Toronto, outlines the fundamental problem: the economy has been viewed as a perfectible machine that experts can fine-tune for maximum efficiency, rather than a complex adaptive system.
Join Roger as he takes us on a tour of the political, economic, and intellectual history of democratic capitalism, and reveals his manifesto for a better post-pandemic America, with important lessons for all Western democracies. Roger’s presentation will be followed by a live interview with business journalist Stefan Stern.
