Amcham Finland hosted a webinar on March 16th about the topic of U.S. travel restrictions. Ceri Koski of U.S. law firm Ogletree Deakins led the discussion. Here are a few of the key takeaways that we wanted to share with you:
- The travel restrictions that went into place midnight (EST) on March 13th are to be reviewed after 30 days. It is widely expected that the restrictions will be extended beyond the initial 30 day period.
- These travel restrictions apply to people who have been physically present in the Schengen Area 14 days prior to entry (now includes UK and Ireland).
- Consular services in many countries including Finland have been suspended. As a result, expect a 3-6 month postponement of processing new transfer visas once the consular services are reopened.
- Ceri advised that in cases where visas will expire in the next 6 months to renew them “in country.” To do so the applicant will incur additional costs and it will take up to 3 months for processing. In country applications are made to the Department of Homeland Security.
- Be sure to pay visa holders in the U.S. who may be working remotely and also be sure to adhere to local labor laws in areas of posting requirements and insurances if your employees are remote working.
